There were many questions that followed today’s hunt.

“How is it that you’re so handsome?”

“Can I buy you a beer?”

But, by far, the most frequently asked question, (and which is still being asked) is, “are you going to post the final results?” Yes. Yes we are. Here, in no particular order (by which I mean the order from highest to lowest), are the results! Their placements, based upon their score, out of a possible (about) 30,000 points:

1st Place, and winner of four iPad2 tablets: The Pink Ladies! 8,890 points

2nd place: Robo Block – 8,725 points

3rd place: Tweet Seekers – 7,975 points

4th place: Team Sexy Awesome – 7,960 points

5th place: Sylvester – 7,620 points

6th place: CMOW Scavengers – 7,605 points

7th place: Unicorn Steak – 7,565 points

8th place: WinnipegWhiteout.com – 7,165 points

11th place: Block Trackers – 6,145 points

12th place: The Winged Eel Fingerlyngs – 5,615 points

13th place: The Disambiguators – 4,760 points

14th place: Team Awesome – 4,440 points

15th place: Block Jocks – 4,335 points

15th place: Tweet Hearts – 4,265 points

16th place: Superheroes in Training – 3,735 ponits

17th place: Tweet Noobs – 2,900 points

One team did not finish. Two teams did not arrive for check-in.

Congratulations to all! By your very participation, each and every one of you helped senior citizens, people who are home-bound, and others who might not otherwise have access to healthy and nutritious food. By your very participation, you have lent a hand to those who would possibly have to leave the home that they know and love. Truly, congratulations!

We hope to have a retrospective of some of the day’s best photos and videos here in the next few days!

A guest post from Tyler Lahucik and Calgary Meals on Wheels

The familiar click of the phone hanging up signals what would be the last caller of the day for her. “That should be everyone for today, Mike.” she says softly to her little companion. A well-mannered pet, who is more fur than dog. “Now, did you get your treat for the day?” She asks, approaching the pantry. Opening it, she is greeted with a small yellow sticky note. A reminder to herself, amidst the mass of many others littering the small home, that she had already given him his snack. A smile moves it’s way across her face, “Well, I guess you have. Then you won’t be too fussy while we wait for company will you.” She makes her way towards the living room as Mike follows closely behind.

It’s 11am on a Thursday, and the older woman sits in her home looking out her front window in expectation. She’s waiting for the once a day delivery from Calgary Meals On Wheels. It’s her birthday and aside from the calls she’s received from a few well-intentioned family members, this is her chance to experience the company of a new person. She’s always delighted to talk with anyone who will talk back, not like Mike who though he kindly listens as he cuddles into her lap, lacks in response. She pats Mike on his head, “Oh, how he just loved you.” she laughs to herself, fondly remembering the doting nature of her late husband and best friend. Suddenly Mike perks up his ears – she knows that this is a sure sign that they’ll soon have company.

From the front window they see a car pull up to the house. An energetic young lady steps out of the vehicle, a spring in her step as she heads towards the front door carrying a few small boxes. “Our volunteer today looks like Princess Kate” the woman says to Mike, still perched on her lap. He looks up at her with a spark of agreement in his eyes; “no matter what you say, I agree.” The young lady in yellow steps up to the door with what Mike knows will soon be their lunch and dinner, as has been the case for as long as he can remember. Before our volunteer even knocks on the door, Mike jumps off his mother’s lap and up to the screen door to greet the newly appointed “Princess Kate.”

‘Kate’ started volunteering with Calgary Meals On Wheels in high-school to get a few extra credits. Her great-grandmother ordered from Meals on Wheels, so it seemed like a good fit even though she wasn’t able to volunteer as a driver. She worked diligently in the office, helping out with answering the phones and when she got old enough, she incorporated it into her work-day. She eventually convinced her employer to send a group of her co-workers down on their lunch-hour to deliver meals as part of a corporate caring initiative within the company. Once a month, the entire group travelled to the downtown depot. They each took a route and delivered meals, afterwards comparing eye-opening stories and laughing about the conversations they had with the many new people they met. ‘Kate’s’ company loved it because it positioned them well within the community, their logo was put on a Calgary Meals on Wheels van and the employees seemed to love it. Scheduling was easy and they knew that it made a difference because they regularly received thank-you letters from staff and always got a copy of the newsletter, which gave their group a huge shout out.

“Hi Mike, are you being a good boy today?” laughed ‘Kate’. The small dog, though usually protective and cautious of new people to the home, greets ‘Kate’ with a warm welcome. “He’s really happy to see you, you must have delivered here before. I’m sorry if I don’t remember you-” ‘Kate politely interrupts, “Don’t be, I’m sure you have a lot of new faces come through.” With the panting approval of Mike, ‘Kate’ is welcomed into their modest home.

“C’mon in, just put everything on the table if you would please, dear.” As ‘Kate’ brings the food items in, she reveals a surprise. “Today I have something more for you, a little birdie-” Mike barks in playful interruption. “…A little doggie told me it was your birthday today!” ‘Kate’ reveals a small but elegantly wrapped gift, and a beautiful array of flowers. Accepting the gifts, the older woman’s gratitude shows on her face as she lights up with great appreciation. The two continue to talk comfortably in the kitchen, as if they had been old acquaintances reunited after some long absence.

The food being delivered to her home was more than just meals for the day. For the older woman, it was company, it was a gesture beyond words. It said to her that someone cared, an assurance that someone was actively engaged in her life.

Though the two could have talked for ages, ‘Kate’ had many more meals to deliver for the day. With a gentle embrace, and one last scratch behind the ear, ‘Kate’ left the home with a sense of gratification. She had been honoured to serve someone who wasn’t able to provide for themselves. Perhaps ‘Kate’ would never know the true extent of the kindness she had shown to the older woman. Or perhaps the older woman would never know the true extent of the satisfaction ‘Kate’ felt in lending a helping hand.

As the door gently shut behind ‘Kate’, she walked back towards her car with a little more spring in her step. Under her breath she quietly whispered, “Happy birthday, love you Grandma.”

We have another contest on the go today!

As we did two weeks ago, we have another $100 CORE gift card up for grabs. Here’s how this is going to work. If you tweets the following highlighted text, you get one entry. If you register a team for the scavenger hunt (today only!), you get FIVE entries into the random draw. You can enter up until 11:59 tonight, but the draw won’t be made until Saturday morning.

Here’s why you want to register a team today:

1. If you win a $100 gift card, you’re pretty much getting into the Hunt (with a chance to win four iPads!) for freeeee! Who doesn’t like free?

2. If you register your team today, you get 150 bonus points to start the Hunt with. That’s like getting three free “easy” items on the Hunt list.

3. What, you need more reasons? C’mon! I’m a hard worker, not a miracle worker. Make do with two reasons, k? (They’re good ones.)

If you do register a team today, please Tweet that you have done so (to get my attention), and e-mail a copy of your receipt from Calgary Meals on Wheels to MisterYYC@gmail.com. (I don’t have live access to the registration information, so wouldn’t know about registrations until Monday.)

Ready? Here’s the tweet!

I’m tweeting to win a $100 gift card @COREshopping from @Tweets4EatsYYC and so can you! http://bit.ly/pZtATi Only 1 weeks to register! #yyc

Good luck!

We’re so pleased that we’re able to have our hunt headquarters and our after-party at Melrose. This place is iconic on what has come to be known as The Red Mile. Melrose IS The Red Mile.

I first approached them earlier this year, shortly after I had launched MrYYC.com. I met with Tony Johanson, the Marketing Manager, and ran a few ideas I had by him. This fundraiser was one of them, and he was supportive right from the very start.

I’ve had an opportunity to get to know Tony a little better over the last few months, and have tremendous respect for him and the work that he does with Melrose. They are, in my opinion, the single best user of social media of any restaurant and nightspot in the city. Their clientele feels welcome and appreciated, and of course, their food and drink are fantastic. Melrose has been actively seeking to offer services to more groups, in addition to “simply” being a restaurant and bar. I have attended a couple of Social Media Breakfast events there, and was present when Awesome Calgary hosted our Thousand Dollar Thursday there as well. Tony and the rest of the staff at Melrose are just the best to work with as a meeting facility in addition to being the Heart of the Red Mile.

If you have an event for which you’re seeking a venue, I highly recommend looking into Melrose. Whether it’s a business meeting, a social or interest group meetup, or, dare I say, a fundraiser, you will find that Melrose can likely offer you all that you need, and a little bit more.

Tremendous thanks to Melrose Cafe and Bar, and Tony specifically. We couldn’t do this without you!

It’s getting mighty exciting now! We’re less than two weeks away from The Day of The Hunt!

As you’re already probably well aware, we have our grand prize of four (count em, FOUR) Apple iPad 2 tablets for the winning team! Thanks again and as always to Shaganappi GM for being our title sponsor and giving us the opportunity to give away such a phenomenal first prize!

We have also arranged for some great door prizes. The names of individual participants will be put into a hat (or a jar, or a colander, or whatever) and you’ll be able to win anything from a free roll and coffee from Cinnzeo to a pretty sweet gift certificate to a swank Calgary restaurant. Have I mentioned that you’ll also be receiving a complimentary beverage after your team has been checked in to start to cool down and have some post-hunt fun!

We’ve got plenty left to do on our end in order to make sure everything goes smoothly, so we’ll be working our tails off for the next ten days to ensure everything goes off just as it should. And we look forward to seeing you there!
